Frank W. White is the executive director of the
Alabama Historical Commission, and is also the State
Historic Preservation Officer. He has directed the
AHC since January, 2008.
Before being named the executive director of the
Alabama Historical Commission, White served as the
Endangered Properties/Revolving Fund Director at the
Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation. In his 11
years at the Georgia Trust, White built the
revolving fund into a self-sustaining program from
an initial fund of $450,000 to $2.3 million. As
program director, he provided alternatives to the
demolition and neglect of architecturally and
historically significant buildings by promoting
rehabilitation and reuse.
White also worked as the architect’s representative
for Atlanta-based John Portman & Associates Inc.,
where he coordinated the design and construction for
the 1.5 million square-foot Brussels International
Trade Mart in Brussels, Belgium. He also served as
the architect’s on-site representative for
3D/International during the construction of the
Hyatt Hotel in Karachi, Pakistan.
White received a Bachelor of Architecture degree
from Auburn University and completed the Advanced
Management Development Program at the Harvard
University Graduate School of Design. Additionally,
White served in the U.S. Navy Seabees, spending 14
months in Vietnam.
“Serving as executive director has given me the
opportunity to visit with communities throughout the
state and learn more about Alabama’s history. This
state is filled with valuable archaeological and
historic resources, and the commission’s primary
goal is to protect, preserve, and interpret these
resources,” said White.
White enjoys cycling, fly fishing, hiking, and traveling with his
family. He serves on the Board of Directors for the
National Conference of State Historic Preservation
Officers (NCSHPO), Alabama Writers Forum, and on the
Advisory Board of the Alabama Tourism Department.
White is a member of the 2010 Class of Leadership
Alabama.
